Diane Cherr received the 2020 award for Best in Show from the Annual Members Exhibition at the Center for Contemporary Printmaking for her print Left Hand Jenny. This exhibition is a celebration of Cherr’s recent prints built around narratives pulled from personal histories, mementos and storytelling. The prints feature intriguing, well-informed interpretations of iconography and symbology joyously expressed as playful physical manifestations which retain important ties to her personal vision of her heritage.
These colorful prints include a combination of photopolymer intaglios, screenprints, and collagraphs printed in small editions and as unique prints. In each, the artist creates a richly-layered palimpsest of symbols imbued with personal meaning, introducing and elevating objects from her family, such as vintage fashion accessories, into universal symbols of femininity in combination with organic objects, those holding cultural significance as traditional symbols associated with heritage and mysticism, such as fertility, protection, or righteousness.
Cherr transformed and abstracted the original source images into varying iterations that are both immediately recognizable or loosely evocative of their origins. In this push and pull between direct and indirect reference for these traditional accoutrements of femininity and fertility, she creates a narrative positioning them as signifiers of female empowerment as they take on new forms balanced with traditional and mystical meanings.
